The Jetstream Story - A Timeline

Working in landscaping during summers thru college, Kurt Litton dreamed of business ownership. One year prior to graduating from UofM-Flint, he realized that dream and started Jetstream. His initial service offering was sprinkler installation….but what name should he give his new company? What might signify water movement and have a catchy sound too? In a brain storming session with a roommate the company name was hatched and in 1986 Jetstream was born. Two years later, in comic irony, it was discovered that a Jetstream is really a current of air not water! But the name was catchy and had already become locally recognizable and so it was kept.
In the winter season of 1988, the Kurt sought more durable, reliable and advanced sprinklers than he had been shown to use. Study that winter uncovered Hunter Industries, “The Irrigation Innovators.” Hunter had help pioneer “gear drive” technology and was selling efficient Hunter PGP Gear Drive sprinkler. Jetstream adopted its use and used it exclusively. In 1989 Jetstream expanded to all all phase landscape construction firm by including landscaping and hydroseeding. By 1995 Jetstream pushed into pavers and retaining walls (now called “Hardscaping”).

The early 2000s lead to more growth and a growing body of satisfied customers. House building and commercial construction were on the rise in Mid MI and with it, Jetstream. Things were looking good and future growth did too. But then came the mortgage crisis of 2006 to 2010. Homeowners stopped installing landscaping (and most other purchases too). Many commercial and residential builders in Mid Michigan went under and closed their doors. In one case, a builder closed its doors, literally overnight, still owing Jetstream a very substantial amount of income.
Those were tough years for Jetstream, but they stuck with it and became stronger for it. A bright spot during and after the economic downturn was the noticeable steady request for sprinkler service. It seemed that even though people weren’t buying landscaping, pools and patios, they were still watering their lawns and subsequently needed service on their sprinkler systems. In addition, people with standing water issues on their properties were still purchasing drainage solutions. Consequently, Jetstream grew in these areas and electively, pushed deeper into these two segments as well.

Fast forward to the fall of 2018. The CEO, Kurt Litton and the Irrigation Manager, Jon Elswick looked around and saw a sea of landscapers, all mediocre at irrigation. At the same time, their enthusiasm for landscaping was declining. The decision was made to leave landscaping behind and narrow core focus to just sprinklers, drainage solutions and outdoor lighting (during the warm months) and commercial snow removal during winter.

With passion and commitment, Jetstream has set the goal to be Mid Michigan’s most sought-after irrigation provider. We achieve this by providing first class service and minimizing your water consumption. Jetstream’s important mission is to be “Leaders in Water Stewardship.” Enthusiastically we seek watering methods and principles that will minimize the use of this precious resource. Using less means paying less. But the greater picture is that using water wisely, using less of it and reducing water waste is good you, for our planet and for generations to come!
